DJ Inno Releases New ZimDancehall Riddim, ‘Rugurugu Boss Riddim’ Feat. Silent Killer, Jahnoz, Hwinza, and More

TAKUDZWA HILLARY CHIWANZA

The fervid, gifted ZimDancehall producer DJ Inno has released a latest sturdy riddim titled Rugurugu Boss Riddim. It is an eclectic array of hard-hitting dancehall sounds bordering on purist notions of what a good ZimDancehall riddim must sound and feel like.

We see DJ Inno — with his Chino nechino movement — maintaining his signature sound of heavy, deep bass-line, drums, kicks, claps, and percussion.

The word ‘rugurugu’ is simply a reference to the dominant urban street slang in Harare’s low-income areas/ghettos at the time which denotes a person whose unruly and unscrupulous behavior is influenced by a misguided consumption and abuse of substances. Zimbabwe is currently grappling with a debilitating drug abuse crisis.

DJ Inno’s sound remains an unorthodox dancehall sound that seeks to confidently challenge what prevails in Zimbabwe’s popular urban culture — at least in ZimDancehall’s contexts — and pushing the bounds of what a typical ZimDancehall riddim must sound like.

Rugurugu Boss Riddim may remain ensconced in the underground sections of ZimDancehall, and may fail to garner mainstream appeal due to its unconventional texture (and marketing/distribution factors), but that does not, in any way whatsoever, subtract its replay value.

The riddim features plenty of established and nascent up-and-coming ZimDancehall artists. It features Silent Killer, Hwinza, Kabhidha, Jah Child, Triple, Masicka (this chanter should seriously change his name), Kruger Don, L Chapo, Buggar B, Jah Wiz, Bobby, and Ras Lalo.

Two of the tracks on the riddim are included in Silent Killer’s 2023 album Hurungwere. These are Paghetto Tichavaisira MaTV, featuring Kabhidha; and Usatisaize Sha, which features Hwinza.

Perhaps our biggest tune to look out on this riddim is Mad Inna Dance by rising ZimDancehall chanter Bobo Kalabash and Jamaican artiste Dwayno.

And we love that Dwayno continues to feature ZimDancehall artists, and in this instance giving DJ Inno a massive co-sign. Dwayno has previously featured with Hwindi President, Soul Jah Love, Cymplex Music, Mount Zion, and more.
