Zimbabwe's Afro electronic music scene reached another milestone on Saturday, 4 July, as MUSHA&—short for MUSHA and Friends—hosted its debut edition, delivering an unforgettable celebration of house music culture and community. It was the perfect, and intimate, gathering of house music aficionados revelling in the excellent, unparalleled vibes that electronic music has to offer on this planet.
Curated by acclaimed producer and DJ Tapiwa, the event brought together an exciting lineup of some of Zimbabwe's finest afro house music talents, including Pia, Tvwvndv, Jay, Maddawgs, Mimi, Tapiwa, Rorri, HALU!, and Young DLC. MUSHA& was a carefully curated experience that showcased the depth and diversity of Zimbabwe's Afro-house movement. The atmosphere was electric, adorned with an array of eclectic sounds from start to finish; with every set building on the last as dancers packed the floor well into the night.
One of the standout moments came when deep house enthusiast Mimi teamed up with supergirl Pia for a seamless back-to-back performance keeping the crowd locked in from beginning to end. It may sound cliche, but seeing the two ladies rock up the decks as they did was evidence of the power women possess when they simply team up. The synergy that they exuded was unmatched, and without a shred of doubt, that was one of the most profound highlights of the night. Worth reliving over and over!
AfröFrenz resident curator Jay also delivered an exceptional performance, taking listeners on a well crafted musical journey that demonstrated both technical precision and an impressive understanding of the dancefloor.
Tapiwa later joined forces with HALU! (you can never uncover the mystery with HALU!) for an inspired back-to-back set before Rorri stepped in, with the trio creating one of the night's defining moments. Their chemistry behind the decks, effortless transitions and carefully selected records produced an immersive experience that had the crowd fully engaged, highlighting why collaborative DJ sets continue to captivate Afro-house audiences.
Beyond the music, MUSHA& excelled in creating a complete event experience. The venue buzzed with positive energy throughout the evening, the bar service was efficient despite the steady crowd, drinks flowed without long waits, and guests were treated to a selection of quality food that complemented the vibrant atmosphere.
The debut edition successfully captured the essence of what Musha& aims to represent—a gathering of friends, creatives and music lovers united through authentic African electronic sounds. Judging by the reception, Musha& has announced itself as an exciting new addition to Zimbabwe's growing Afro-house calendar and one that enthusiasts will be eagerly anticipating in the future.
