MUTARE – A 68-year-old man from Odzi was sentenced to 18 years in prison for raping his 14-year-old granddaughter on multiple occasions, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.
The man, who was not named to protect the victim's identity, raped the girl in October 2023 while she and two other minors were left in his custody.
He called her into a kitchen hut, kissed her, instructed her to lie down on a sack and raped her, prosecutors said. He told her he loved her as much as his wife, who shared the same totem as the victim.
The man also threatened the girl not to tell anyone, promising her biscuits. He went on to rape her three more times in his wife's absence.
The abuse came to light on January 16, 2024, when the victim told her uncle, who reported it to police, leading to the man's arrest.
He was originally sentenced to 20 years, but two years were suspended.
