Six arrested in Zimbabwe for hijacking truck carrying Remington Gold cigarettes

HARARE — The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of six individuals in connection with a robbery that occurred on the Masvingo-Harare Road. The suspects, posing as detectives, intercepted a truck transporting 581 boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes from Harare to Beitbridge on November 21, 2023, according to a police statement.

The accused, identified as Trymore Chimbambo (39), Maxwell Kudzibwe (28), Joe Partson (50), Takudzwa Brian Pawandiwa (33), Samuel Mushambiri (34), and Tatenda Gorombe (49), handcuffed the truck’s occupants and forced the driver to divert the vehicle to Gutu turn-off.

Following a tip-off, detectives apprehended Chimbambo and Kudzibwe at Highglen Shopping Centre, Harare, on November 23, 2023. The duo implicated the other four suspects, leading to their subsequent arrests.

The police recovered 430 boxes of the stolen cigarettes from a house in Waterfalls, Harare, and a company at Tilco Industries, Chitungwiza. The suspects’ getaway vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, and a Mercedes Benz truck used to transport the stolen goods from Masvingo to Harare were also seized.

The ZRP is now seeking information leading to the arrest of three more suspects, identified as Gift Kajawo, Norest Dipi alias Kabhuru, and Tawanda.
