Remembering Garry Mapanzure - A Talented Afropop Singer Taken Too Soon

INNOCENT VEREMU

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the tragic loss of Garry Mapanzure, a promising young Afropop singer from Zimbabwe. Garry, born Gerry Garikai Munashe Mapanzure, was a talented artist known for his soulful voice and unique style. He grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe, in a pastoral family, and it was through his involvement in the church that he discovered his passion for singing.

However, the music industry has been shaken by the news of a fatal accident involving Garry Mapanzure, which claimed the lives of two individuals.

Reports indicate that Garry was currently in a critical condition, fighting for his life.

The accident occurred on the Beitbridge-Masvingo Highway in Masvingo when a vehicle turning into Clipsham Views residential area collided with another vehicle coming from Beitbridge.

Garry was a passenger in the vehicle driven by his sister, and sadly, his young nephew lost his life in the crash as well.

The scene of the accident was one of devastation, with pictures showcasing the wreckage of a maroon Mazda Demio vehicle, beyond repair. The damage on both vehicles indicated a head-on collision, highlighting the severity of the crash. This tragic event has left those who knew and admired Garry Mapanzure in a state of shock and grief.

As a listener and a friend, my personal introduction to Garry was in 2019 when he released the song "TV room" with Hillzy. Garry was not only a talented artist but also a warm and genuine person.

He would reach out to check on me, and I was privileged to be one of the individuals he would seek opinions from before releasing his music. It is incredibly heartbreaking to write about Garry in the past tense, as he was just celebrating his son's first birthday in April. The loss his sister is experiencing, losing both her brother and her child, is a pain beyond words.

During his career, Garry Mapanzure released three albums and several singles, showcasing his growth and versatility as an artist. His albums included "Sushi Season" in 2020 and "Special Delivery" in 2022.

Most recently, he delighted fans with his third album titled "Novus." The Latin word "Novus," meaning "novel" or "new," perfectly captures the fresh and innovative nature of his latest release.

Personally, I will deeply miss the late-night conversations with Garry, where he would often share stories of his travels to different countries, flexing on me about being in different time zones while chasing his dreams. His passion for music and his determination to succeed were evident in every word he spoke.

In this time of immense pain, let us extend our prayers and support to the Mapanzure family, especially Garry's sister, who has endured unimaginable loss. May they find strength and guidance during this difficult period.

Our hearts also go out to the Madima family, who lost their beloved Langton Madima, GZU Students Representative Council President, in the same accident.
Garry Mapanzure, though his physical presence may be gone, his music will forever live on in our hearts.

His talent and dedication will continue to inspire aspiring artists, and his memory will be cherished by all those whose lives he touched.

Rest in the beats, Garry, knowing that your music will forever be a part of our lives.
