TAWANDA CHARI
The energy was undeniable at this year’s July Fest, held at The Odyssey in Kadoma on July 18th. Kicking off the night’s performances with style, Segulm, delivered a carefully curated 15-minute set that introduced fans to his debut album First of Season. Every move, and every outfit was calculated yet organic, bringing together fashion, music, and originality in a way that turned heads.
Dressed in his own handmade Seguru Denims creations, Segulm brought high energy choreography and a genre bending sound based on his signature Guru Afro Music. And while many in the crowd were hearing his music for the first time, the reaction was one of intense curiosity and appreciation.
A large ensemble of a vibrant dance troupe and backing vocalists, donned a striking uniform of crisp white long sleeved tops, classic blue denim, and eye catching red durags or bandanas. This unified aesthetic created a powerful visual identity and also underscored the collective energy of the group. Segulm, the charismatic frontman, effortlessly commanded attention with his distinct attire; a light coloured, fringed jacket paired with matching jeans and adorned with multiple colourful necklaces. This unique look ensured he stood out.
The auditory experience was equally impressive.
The presence of a full live band, including a skilled guitarist, a soulful saxophonist, a drummer, a versatile keyboardist, and a bassist, was a major highlight. This live instrumentation imbued the performance with an authentic richness often unparalleled in digital recordings.
Beyond the technicalities, Segulm's style and performance radiated an infectious energy. The synchronised choreography was well rehearsed, dynamic, and a significant contributor to the performance's vibrancy.
Despite opening the show, a spot that often gets overlooked, Segulm’s presence lingered throughout the evening. He set the tone for a stacked lineup that followed, including Kadoma local Trevor who wowed with live covers, Young Fantan who shared the stage with a rising ZimDancehall protégé, the soulful and mellow Oriyano with his full band setup, and later appearances by ChillMaster, Seh Calaz, Murumba Pitch, Master H, Saintfloew, and Master KG.
But Segulm’s performance managed to carve its own space in a night packed with talent.
According to representatives from Delta, Pacific, and several exhibiting sponsors present, his set was a breath of originality. The sentiment was echoed by festival goers who found themselves captivated, even if they couldn't yet sing along.
