Hurricanes off the mark
Harare Hurricanes finally secured their first win of the tournament with a brilliant five wicket victory over the Durban Qalandars. The Hurricanes, led by Regis Chakabva, handed the Qalandars their first defeat of the tournament in a high scoring affair.
Regis Chakabva batted through the Hurricanes with an unbeaten 44 striking at 200 as he closed a 127 run-chase the highest of tournament so far quite comfortably with two balls to spare.
He was supported heavily by two impressive cameos, one by Irfan Pathan who smacked 37 off just 14 balls comprising four sixes as well as Mohammad Nabi’s 19.
This was a response to some belligerent batting from Tim Seifert who top scored with an unbeaten 71.
Seifert was striking at an impressive 229 comprising of four fours and six sixes. He combined with Asif Ali for a 50+ partnership for the third wicket before Nick Welch produced a quick-fire to put 126 on the board. It was a long day for the bowlers with only Mohammad Nabi coming unscathed from both teams with figures of 2-9.
Regis Chakabva was named man of the match.
Cape Town Samp Army demolish Johannesburg Buffaloes
Table toppers Cape Town Samp Army's explosive batting blew away the Joburg Buffaloes by seven wickets.
Stand-in captain for the Samp Army Sean Williams won the toss and elected to field first. It proved an inspired decision as Marumani continued with his impressive form; he got his maiden T10 half century with a splendid 54 off 24 balls.
Following his 43 against the Bulawayo Braves, he took his brilliant batting up a notch in pursuit of a modest 96.
Marumani partnered with Rahmanullah Gurbaz combined for the highest opening wicket in the tournament thus far of 86. Marumani the more aggressive partner, with four fours and the same number of sixes. Marumani also won the catch of the match which removed Buffaloes skipper, Mohammad Hafeez.
The Buffaloes’ innings had gone off to an awful start as they lost the wicket off the very first ball as William Smeed was run at the non-striker end.
The Buffaloes never got going as Milton Shumba (14), Yousuf Pathan (15) and Mohammad Hafeez all had starts but failed to put a competitive score as the 96 proved to be slightly below par. Karim Janat was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-25 from his quota.
Bulawayo Braves fall to third consecutive defeat
The Durban Qalandars bounced back to winning ways with 25 run victory over the Bulawayo Braves.
The Qalandars condemned the Braves to their third consecutive defeat with a tremendous all-round display.
After being put to bat, man in form Tim Seifert led the charge yet again with some ferocious batting up top. He quickly raced to 44 off just 14 balls before he was caught brilliantly by Beau Webster off the bowling of Tymal Mills (his innings had four fours and four sixes).
He got ample support from fellow opener Hazratulllah Zazai (21 off 11) and Andre Fletcher (32 off 15) as the Qalandars threatened to put a score in the excess of 130. However, the Braves pulled back to restrict them to 122.
The bowling was equally good led by Mohammad Amir who ended up with figures of 1-14.
They strangled the Braves line-up by picking wickets at regular intervals. Brad Evans was the pick of the bowlers finishing with figures of 3-20, taking the big wickets of Ryan Burl, Thisara Perera and Ben McDermott.
Tendai Chatara also chipped in with two including the wicket of skipper Sikandar Raza who fell for 11. The Braves managed to bat through their overs scrapping to 97, twenty-five short of their target.
Tim Seifert was named Player of the Match.
