ALBUM REVIEW: Garry Mapanzure - ‘Novus’, The Renewed, Refreshed, and Rejuvenated Sonic Experience

The words “renewed, refreshed, and rejuvenated” are what aptly describe the new 2023 album release byGarry Mapanzure, known for his previous albums Sushi Season in 2020 and Special Delivery in 2022. This time, he delights fans with his third album titled Novus”. The Latin word Novus, which means novel or new, perfectly encapsulates the fresh and innovative nature of this latest release.

In January 2023, Garry Mapanzure highlighted that he would be releasing a new album this year.

On his Facebook page, accompanied with the album art cover, he wrote:

A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself”

Ladies and Gentlemen, im at peace…
If you know you know

Well, ladies and gentlemen, the album Novus by Garry Mapanzure is here. Renewed, refreshed, and revived.

One key highlight of Garry's albums is his ability to touch on different genres, and Novus is no exception. While Garry is certified as a ladies' man, known for his tunes dedicated to women, he also showcases his talent for writing great gospel songs. In each of his albums, he includes one gospel track.

In Novus, this track is the introspective Rigiyoni Takawanda, which references the Bible's Legion and explores Garry's personal relationship with God. He bares his soul, confessing his sins, acknowledging his flaws, and seeking God's mercy and forgiveness.

Kuhardhira, featuring Bagga, serves as a hustlers anthem, highlighting the rewards of hard work and the desire for protection from negative influences. Garrys lyrics convey a strong motivation to keep pushing forward, even in the face of adversity.

The album consists of 10 tracks, making it a compendious 35-minute listening experience that gets straight to the point but without starving us of any necessary details. While this album is categorized as side A, one can hope for a side B release to complete the narrative.

The albums outro, Song For Ya, showcases Garry's versatility as he explores different musical styles. He sings about a special lady who brings out the best in him and makes him feel like singing opera.

The lyrics express his admiration for her, and the song was written without any toxic influences, highlighting Garry's genuine emotion and creativity.

Novus features collaborations with Nashe, Bagga, and Takura, adding depth and variety to the album. The production is impeccably top-notch, with exceptionally talented producers such as Teddy Tee-Jay, Golden Fingerszw, Tadexx, Ghost the Magician, Hoolanwolf, and Ougweibeats contributing their skills.

It offers a wide range of sounds without reducing the discography, in its entirety, into something that is too predictable.

Teddy Tee-Jay, who also served as the albums mixing and mastering engineer, ensures a cohesive and polished sound throughout.

Since its release on July 12th, 2023, Novus by Garry Mapanzure is available on all streaming platforms.

The albums rollout has been impressive, with a visually appealing video for Rigiyoni Takawanda and a creative visualizer for Chimoko chi Danger, the latter which features Takura. Fans can anticipate more videos, shows, and performances, as Garry Mapanzure is known for attracting largely female audiences, which we love really.

  • ALBUM RATING: Overall, Novus earns a rating of 7.5/10.

Garry Mapanzure continues to showcase his talent and versatility with this album, offering a mix of heartfelt and catchy tracks that leave a lasting impression.

It is undoubtedly a remarkable addition to his discography.
