Mobile network operator NetOne has launched a new service called Reverse Calling (Pay for Me), allowing subscribers to make phone calls even when they have zero airtime, provided the receiving party agrees to pay for the call.
The service is aimed at addressing everyday communication challenges faced by many Zimbabweans, where urgent or important calls are often missed due to lack of balance. NetOne says Reverse Calling is designed for “real people and real situations,” where communication cannot wait for payday or the next airtime top-up.
According to the company, Reverse Calling enables a customer with no airtime to initiate a call, after which the recipient is notified and given the option to accept or decline the call. If the recipient accepts, they pay for the call and the conversation proceeds normally. If they decline, the call ends and no charges are incurred by either party.
“No tricks. No confusion. Just communication that works when you need it most,” NetOne said in its announcement.
The operator highlighted common scenarios where the service could make a difference, including students needing to call home about fees, vendors confirming deliveries, farmers reaching buyers, job seekers following up on opportunities, or travellers seeking help when stranded.
“The person receiving the call is always informed and always in control,” NetOne explained. “They can accept the call and pay for it, or decline if they cannot. If they accept, the call goes through normally. If they decline, no one is charged. Simple. Honest. Fair.”
NetOne said the introduction of Reverse Calling is rooted in the recognition that while money may be tight, communication remains essential. “You may not have airtime today, but you still have a voice. You still have needs. You still have people who depend on you — and people you depend on,” the company stated.
The telecommunications provider emphasised that the service is not about innovation for its own sake, but about maintaining connection during difficult economic times. “In tough economic times, small solutions make a big difference,” NetOne said, adding that Reverse Calling replaces missed calls and “please call me” messages with meaningful conversations.
“This is NetOne saying: ‘We see you. We understand how you live. And we are here to make communication easier for you,’” the company said.
NetOne concluded by stressing that access to communication should not be determined by airtime balance. “Because no one should fail to speak simply because their balance is zero. And no Zimbabwean should be disconnected when connection matters most.”
