TAWANDA CHARI
In a space where vulnerability is often shrouded in bravado, Eden Lang offers us Greatful, a refreshingly mellow, moody indie-pop EP that spans just 19 minutes but feels like a warm, lingering hug. Known for her soft, dreamy vocal tone and introspective writing, Eden Lang returns with a project that gently earns our attention.
From the very first track, Thank You, Eden sets the tone for the EP. It’s a gentle ode to gratitude. Unfiltered and honest. “I’m grateful for the breath inside my lungs / I’m grateful for the sun that keeps on peeping through the clouds,” she intones. It’s a track that acknowledges life in all its shades. The good, the bad and the confusingly ugly.
Whether it's about the people who stayed or those who left, Eden makes her gratitude prominent. It’s the spiritual centre of the EP, grounding it in self-awareness and acceptance.
Penny Wishes follows and it’s a lyrical gut punch. “Penny wishes always seem to come true, pretty prayers never seem to get to you.” The contrast she draws between childlike hope and spiritual frustration is sobering. It's an understated moment of reflection that perfectly captures the bitter aftertaste of unanswered prayers.
Then comes Honey Lemonade, a total sonic pivot. The bass guitar and crisp drums breathe life into this groovy gem. It feels like a soundtrack to a late afternoon drive with the windows down. “I feel good. I feel nice. Like a movie set in paradise,” Eden sings, channeling a kind of sunlit euphoria we all chase. It’s a feel-good track, but still tethered to Lang’s signature soft delivery. Never too loud, just enough to make you sway.
Beautiful takes us right back to that emotional edge. It's painfully relatable in its quiet doubt: “If God made me perfect then why do I feel this way ... Sometimes it feels like I really need some love.” These aren’t lyrics fashioned to impress; they strike the listener with a profound desire to connect. The vulnerability here isn’t performative. And that is without any prevarication. It's a diary page you weren’t meant to see, but you’re softly elated you did.
Then comes the undeniable standout: Same Room. This is Eden Lang at her very best. When she’s writing about love that’s not just felt but understood. “Even if they put you in the same room, Darling, I’ll still choose you,” she declares. It’s romantic without being cliché, poetic without trying too hard.
For anyone who’s ever known what it feels like to be truly seen and loved exactly how you need to be loved, this one’s for you.
Greatful is exactly what it claims to be. A meditation on gratitude, not just for the light, but also for the shadow it casts. It’s an emotionally intelligent body of work from an artist who continues to master the art of subtle storytelling.
