CCC demands party assets, money, and donations from Nelson Chamisa

BULAWAYO — The interim committee of Zimbabwe's opposition party, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has requested its former leader, Nelson Chamisa, to surrender the party's financial records and assets. This follows Chamisa's resignation last Thursday, during which he accused the party of being commandeered by the ruling Zanu PF.

Chamisa, who narrowly missed out on the presidency in the 2023 election to Emmerson Mnangagwa, announced his departure from the party he established in 2021. He has promised to reveal his future plans shortly.

His resignation was prompted by internal strife within the CCC, with a rival faction led by self-proclaimed secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu recalling and replacing several of Chamisa's allies in parliament and local councils.

The faction's treasurer, Mbuso Siso, informed The NewsHawks that he would contact Chamisa to verify his resignation and request the party's financial records and donations.

"Our nine-member interim steering committee will convene urgently tomorrow to discuss former CCC president Nelson Chamisa's announcement and the next steps," Siso stated. He expressed regret over Chamisa's abrupt departure, criticizing him for publicly disassociating himself from the CCC without formally notifying the interim committee.

Siso emphasized the committee's desire for transparency regarding the party's finances, including the amount received from donations and how it was utilized. He also mentioned the party's constitution and a roadmap towards congress.

"As acting Treasurer General, I want all the books, accounts, and records of expenditures for accountability purposes. We need to know from records of how much he and the party received from donations and how the money was used. We also need to know if the party has some assets that should remain in its name after his departure," Siso said.

The committee managing the CCC includes Dingilizwe Tshuma, former legislator for Entumbane-Njube constituency in Bulawayo as chair; Albert Mhlanga, former Pumula MP and deputy; Tshabangu, secretary-general; Khaliphani Phugeni, information; Sikhululekile Moyo, interim chairperson for women; Nomvula Mguni, ex-proportional representation MP; Siso, treasurer and Benoni Ncube, youth.

The self-appointed CCC structure executed the recalls, leading to Chamisa's resignation. He claimed that the party has now been "hijacked and contaminated" by impostors and fraudsters. However, Siso insisted that the committee is the legitimate body running the party and pledged to work diligently to advance it.
