Zim PSL Matchday 30: Brito Castigates Lack of Attitude and Confidence as Bosso Lose Grip

TAWANDA CHARI

BULAWAYO—Highlanders extended their winless run in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League to seven matches after they were held to a stalemate by an even more struggling Caps United at Barboufields Stadium.

Unhappy ... Brito continues to lament about his players' lack of attitude

Bosso's last victory was on September 17 when they dismissed Yadah Stars 2-0 at home. They have been without a win in six matches on the bounce and now sit eight points behind the log leaders Ngezi Platinum who were stunned by on the road by Hwange.

Fans are demanding answers to how their team is losing grip in the league when they started so well going unbeaten for 19 games.

For coach Brito, it all boils down to his players' apparent dearth of attitude and Confidence.

“l have never seen this. This is the first time in my life that l have to face such a ciircumstance, draw, draw, lose... If you assess the game, in the first half Caps United had one shot on target and one goal. In the second half, we were better. We played well, we were all over them and created more chances but unfortunately, we scored only one. That's football,” Highlanders coach Baltemar Brito said.

“Sometimes it's hard to explain. We had the chances to win the game in the second half. We didn't unfortunately, we accept the draw because we want to finish in the best possible position on the log.

“So, I take it as lack of attitude, because the boys, they fight and do their best at training sessions. But, lack of confidence is one of the areas we should address, one by one each player. In general, we think this is to do much more with personality.”

The stories coming out in the media all pop up for every sports team in a rough patch but some things naturally true. Highlanders simply do not score goals.

That 19 unbeaten run might paper over cracks but variance eventually caught up with them. Bosso's unbeaten run had 8 stalemates and draws are not very valuable if teams around you avoid draws and win more games even when they lose more.

Bosso also had 10 games where they won by a 1 goal margin.

Brito pinning their misfortune on attitude and confidence issues is a little too convenient.is will rub some players the wrong way, especially if the team isn't winning. It's also a very easy way to lose the dressing room if players feel they are being thrown under the bus and that would cause actual attitude problems.

Players will obviously get frustrated if the team is underperforming. Best believe they want to win more than anyone else.

If Brito, his staff, his bosses and every other Highlanders fan are getting annoyed that the team is not winning anymore you don't think there's a possibility that most players are also adevasted by this especially when nothing is is working for them?

That doesn't mean the players have quit or have attitude and lack of personality. They'll look worse trying too hard or actually downing tools, whichever side the needle falls to.

It happens to every coach and sports team. It's not a uniquely Highlanders conundrum.
