Harare man killed for refraining man from assaulting girlfriend

HARARE – A 44-year-old Harare man was killed by a group of seven men after he tried to stop one of them from assaulting his girlfriend, police said. 




Malvern Paul was attacked with bricks and empty beer bottles by Malvern Batsirai, 34, and six other suspects at Gail Court, a residential building in central Harare, on Sunday afternoon, police said in a statement.

Police have arrested Batsirai in connection with the murder and are looking for the other six suspects, who are identified as Gaza Cartel, Dhadza, and Tsomutsomu, among others.

"Police in Harare are investigating a case of murder in which Malvern Paul (44) died after being attacked with bricks and empty beer bottles by Malvern Batsirai (34) and six other suspects at Gail Court, corner 8th Street and Samora Machel Avenue on 05/11/23," the statement read.

"The victim had tried to refrain Malvern Batsirai from assaulting his girlfriend. Police have since arrested Malvern Batsirai in connection with the case. Six suspects who include Gaza Cartel, Dhadza, and Tsomutsomu are on the run. Anyone with information to report at any nearest police station."

Police appealed to the public to assist them with any information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects.

Domestic violence/intimate partner violence is a prevalent problem in Zimbabwe, where women's rights groups say many cases go unreported or are not taken seriously by the authorities.
