2023 ZIM PSL Matchday 28: Highlanders held by Green Fuel as FC Platinum and Ngezi Drop Points

The 2023 Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) witnessed some exhilarating Matchday 28 action this Wednesday, with Highlanders dropping points while Dynamos edged Ngezi Platinum Stars.

Highlanders, who were hoping to close the gap on the leaders Ngezi, were frustrated by a late penalty from Green Fuel, while defending champions FC Platinum and Ngezi Platinum both suffered defeats.

Highlanders were poised to claim a vital win at Green Fuel Stadium, after Marvellous Chigumira gave them an early lead in the sixth minute with a clinical finish.

The visitors dominated the first half, and could have doubled their advantage when Washington Navaya missed a golden opportunity from Brighton Manhire's brilliant wing play.

However, Green Fuel came back strongly in the second half, and put Highlanders under pressure.

The hosts were rewarded for their persistence in the stoppage time, when David Bizabani converted a spot-kick.

The match ended 1-1, leaving Highlanders in second place, seven points behind the top spot with the season now coming to a conclusion.

Leaders Ngezi Platinum Stars failed to extend their lead as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Dynamos.

Ngezi's inconsistencies were exposed following goals by Elton Chikona and Keith Madera in either half to hand the Glamour Boys a much-needed victory which placed them in third position.

Takunda Benhura’s second half goal gave a consolation to the Mhondoro-based, who remained on 54 points.

Meanwhile, FC Platinum's hopes of retaining their crown were dealt a major blow, as they lost 1-2 at home to Black Rhinos.

The visitors stunned the champions with two goals in the first half from Lot Chiunga, who scored with a header and a volley.

FC Platinum tried to mount a comeback in the second half, and pulled one back through Gift Bello's header, but it was too little too late.

CAPS United remained unwavering with their recovery after coming from behind to beat Simba Bhora.

The Green Machine marched to victory through goals from Thulani Joseph, Rodwell Chinyengetere and Blessing Sarupinda.

Simba got their goals courtesy of Tinashe Balakasi’s brace.

The results mean that Ngezi Platinum Stars remain at the top of the table with 54 points, followed by Highlanders with 47. Dynamos trail behind with 46, although they still have a game to play.

In fourth place is FC Platinum with 46 points, followed by Manica Diamonds and Chicken Inn who are tied at 43 points.
