Elections 2023: 23 August declared a public holiday in Zimbabwe

With Zimbabweans going to cast their votes in the harmonized elections on 23 August, 2023, and with the curtain for political campaigns having closed, the electoral feeling is palpable.

To that effect, 23 August has been declared a public holiday in Zimbabwe so that citizens can go about their electoral activities without hindrance. 

The announcement was proclaimed by government via General Notice 1345A of 2023 published in the Government Gazette on 21 August. 

In delivering this latest news regarding elections in Zimbabwe, Minister of Home Affairs Kazembe Kazembe declared the 23rd of August 2023 a public holiday in terms of section 38(2) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13). 

The General Notice reads: 

IT is hereby notified that the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, in terms of section 38(2) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13), has declared that the 23rd of August, 2023, shall be a public holiday for the purposes of polling for the 2023 harmonised elections.
