With much obviousness (on a weekend dominated by goalless draws), the major highlight of Matchday 3 of the 2023-2024 Castle Lager Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League was Highlanders Football Club’s victory over rivals FC Platinum.

Bosso edged Pure Platinum Play 2-1 at their traditionally fabulous and historical Barbourfields fortress in Bulawayo.

This was Highlanders’ first victory over the Zvishavane-based side for the first time in 9 years.

And of course, the jubilations were palpably infectious across the whole country. Barbourfields is on record a major sporting rendezvous especially for the passionate football fans in Bulawayo.

The Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premier League returns for the 2023-2024 season amid acrimonious turmoil as concerns the FIFA and ZIFA debacle which has seen the national team banned from playing and participating in all international football related activities.

It is a heartbreaking material reality that Zimbabwean football, without the international flagship is effectively milked off of its hope.

But thanks to the Bulawayo outfit and all time football giants Highlanders, the game in Zimbabwe is withstanding odds.

One even hopes for more competitiveness from the traditional giants Dembare, CAPS, the two Platinum outfits, Manica Diamonds; and from all the new entrants in Zimbabwe’s top-flight football league.

Highlanders secured an unforgettable two-nil lead in the first half courtesy of Stanley Ngala (27th min) and Peter Muduwa (36th min) goals.

Bosso conceded in the second half (50’ Walter Musona), but maintained their lead through an impressive and impenetrable defensive play to gift the Soweto Stand a big smile for the weekend – and hope for a season with better fortunes than the previous ones.

A rejuvenated CAPS United had an emotional rollercoaster that saw Adrian Silla become the hero after a stunning late winner on his debut against ZPC Kariba.

Kepekepe Bhora hope for a fruitful season following a tumultuous and dismal 2022-23 season in which they constantly teetered on the precipice of relegation.

The log standing is already highlighting a blockbuster season ahead with Dynamos also starting the season geared up – but even still, it’s too early to tell.

After three games, Dembare, Kepekepe, and Bosso lead the table with 7 points apiece; followed by Hwange and FC Platinum with 6 points each.

New entrants Green Fuel, Sheasham, and Simba have struggled to find an early and comfortable settling-in  as they sit at the bottom of the table alongside Cranborne Bullets, Herentals, Manica Diamonds, and Bulawayo Chiefs.

Hwange’s four nil thrashing of Green Fuel is the biggest victory over the weekend following a winless run of fixtures on Saturday that ended in stalemates.
